Plastic pollution fight in Niger DeltaThe Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has launched a targeted anti-plastic pollution campaign in Nigeria’s Niger Delta, focusing on protecting coastal creeks as part of 2025 World Environment Day activities. Spearheaded by Project Coordinator Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey during a sensitization program at Bomu fishing port (Rivers State), the initiative includes banning single-use plastics across HYPREP offices and project sites while promoting community awareness through environmental clubs in schools and outreach to local fisherfolk. Highlighting the severity of Nigeria’s plastic crisis, where 50–60 million sachet water packs are discarded daily, endangering aquatic life and public health, Zabbey called for collaborative policy development and enforcement involving government, industry, and communities. The campaign gained local support from Bomu’s paramount ruler, HRH Benedict Vurasi-Tenalo, who pledged community mobilization through town hall meetings. This effort aligns with global “Ending Plastic Pollution” goals while addressing the Delta’s unique ecological vulnerabilities, including mangrove ecosystems threatened by plastic waste.
