Prof Sylvia Uzochukwu President of the BSN, and a professor of Food Science and Biotechnology-Picsart-AiImageEnhancerThe Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN), led by Professor Sylvia Uzochukwu, has urged the nation—and the global community—not to disregard modern biotechnology as a strategic tool for addressing pressing challenges such as food security, climate resilience, healthcare innovation, and international trade

She highlighted the importance of bioengineering to develop drought-resistant crops, especially given increasing population pressure and changing climate conditions.

Prof. Uzochukwu emphasized the need for a product-based regulatory approach, where the safety of biotech products is assessed regardless of the production technique. She praised the efforts of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) and the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) in supporting biosafety and innovation, but noted both remain underfunded and typically rely on donor assistance. She warned that with donors pulling back, sustainable government investment in science and technology is critical.
